Discussion and conclusion

While we cannot infer overall mainstream penetration or trends from the study like this, based from  the feedback that exist in adopter., it is clear that some maturing is taking place in the whole desktop Linux arena. The technology have moved on, and some issues that have dogged Linux related activity in the past , such as the fragmentation across the distribution, inferior and user experience, and the device driver compatibility, are notable by their lack of prominance in the feedback that we have recieved.

We can also encouraged by the appreciation within the adopter community of the need to put more in  the focus at the end use views requirements. This is largely important because sadly, may have been turned off in the past by the often encountered evangelist attitude of ” The answer in Linux, now what was the question again? Bear in mind that, it is extremely useful to see IT professionals with experience the real-world deployment in a business   context  that would provide insight which is the user are more approriate targets for the Linux and, equally, which are not.

Deployment status, plans and aspiration

Exploring the desktop Linux footprint adopter organisations can taught to us,  a lot of  initial adaptation behavior  and the overall potential that exists. It is nice that we have to compare the degree to which adopters have rolled out desktop Linux to date, the anticipated footprint containing current constraints in mind, and the most ultimate theoretical potential.

Shared Ideas in the Discussion

Most of what’s presented in this report comes from a research findings completed in April 2009 during which input was collected from 1,275,IT professionals. The majority of this, around 90% had an actual experience of the said OS being deployed in their field; business or home. Some are even IT managers, consultant and/or in a hands-on capacity.   A good cross section of organisation sizes was represented, and further details of the study sample are provided in Appendix A.

Talking about methodology, participants completed survey hosted on www.theregister.com based on mix of multiple choice and open questions, the latter allowing  respondents to express themselves freely in key areas. In terms of the questions themselves, the majority were concerened with activity in a business context, which apart from yielding the kind of contributions that we are looking into. This hide the dilution of business alike insights by pure hobbyists and enthusiasts who often have different point of view.

This case study was sponsored by International Business Machine(IBM), but was designed, put to action and analysed on an independent basis by Freedom Dynamics under its Community Research Programme.

CAVEAT: All of the data presented in this report is based on a sample which was deliberately slewed towards the desktop Linux  adopter community. While such concentrated experience is perfect for the purposes of this report, it is important  not to misinterpret any of the statistics as relating to the IT or Business population as generalized.

Using Linux on your Desktop

Microsoft Windows based desktop was so widely used and we can never deny this fact. This is widely seen in Business mainstream environment  for this is sometimes the default OS of all the computer being supplied. But their are other organizations and business firms that offer an alternatives for this widely adapted traits. They look for another OS that they can avail for free which doesn’t sacrifices the use of it. Linux was the best alternative for the later OS and this is 100% FREE of charge. Based on the candid ‘warts and all’ comments from over thousands of Linux User who practically adopt and shift.  Here is the practical approach of desktop Linux in a real world business context.

Survey Result

Shift to Desktop Linux was driven by Cost Reduction

Thousands of IT professionals joined, when they’re asked during the Online Survey regarding their experience with the latter OS, over 70% of respondents indicated cost reduction as the primary driver for adoption. Also the respondents are associated with business firms where the computer platform are using Linux.  Ease of securing the desktop because the appearance was so user-friendly. Low maintenance was also associated and high integration was also cited as support to the benefit.

Deployment was limited “Old die hard”

Based on the survey, almost 20% only was rolled out to Linux for all the computers in their office. This is due of extensive deployment which requires details of each unit. Some also of the users in the department was not so familiar with each features for they are with Windows. They take it as a burden adopting and getting to know with the software. They feel contented with the latter platform not anymore considering the price and save for this platform. It is so necessary to pay additional attention to detail since this is different. User acceptance and application compatibility was also seen.

Desktop Linux Users Numbers Continue to Grow

desktop linux users doubled

Some great news from desktop linux.com! They recently revealed the desktop survey results. The facts are there, the number of desktop linux users has doubled the last year!

And what is the desktop linux users distribution of choice? The Ubuntu family (Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, Edubuntu) leads on, and SuSe is the second runner up.

The survey shows us that more and more people are trying out a GNU/Linux distro, more and more people are getting aware that they can choose their OS. Up until Dell started to cooperate with Ubuntu, we had to accept that a PC you ordered came with a MS OS install (unless you bought parts and built your own pc).
